Two new A-10 books announced by Reid Air Publications

Good news for the A-10 Thunderbolt II community and "Hog" enthusiasts all over the world! Reid Air Publications is preparing two new books about this amazing aircraft.


Already in 2007, Jake Melampy - as author and his own publisher - had released his outstanding book "The Modern Hog Guide - The A-10 Warthog Exposed". I got my own copy in December 2008 as a Christmas gift from my son. And I declared this book as a "Must have" for A-10 enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, on November 13 last year, Jake announced a second edition of this book. He wrote:

Since the Hog Guide sold out back in the Spring, I bet I get 10 e-mails daily asking if it's going to be reprinted. The answer is no, it will not. However, a 2nd Edition of the book is nearly done, and will be released sometime in 2012, depending on how other releases (The Modern Hornet Guide, and two new Modeler's Guides) shake out early in the year. The 2nd Edition features all-new images, more pages, and more coverage of the early, pre-LASTE jets, and even more coverage of the A-10C and A-10A+. It will also have a lot more "in action" and air-air photos, something lacking in the first edition. Couple that with the new printing company we're using now, and it should be a far superior book to the first release, for the same price.

Secondly, on January 5, 2012, Jake announced another new A-10 book. He wrote:

If you're a follower of the aviation magazines such as Combat Aircraft, Air Forces Monthly, etc, you've probably seen Neil Dunridge's name before. He's an astonishingly talented photographer from the UK, and a great guy to hang around with.

He's been chasing the A-10 around the world now for a couple years compiling images and information to put together his book, which will be published by Reid Air Publications this summer. I'll let the images speak for themselves. This is going to be a very, very cool book, with combat pics from Afghanistan and Iraq, and every A-10 squadron at home.

His title will be "A-10C Thunderbolt II -- 21st Century Warthog".

According to an e-mail from Nobuyoshi Noji, Editor, Department of military aviation magazine "J-Wings", Ikaros Publications Ltd, Tokyo, this A-10 book - already announced on Warthog News - will be released as planned on October 28 in Japan. It's in Japanese language only.

Last week, Nobuyoshi Noji, Editor, Department of military aviation magazine "J-Wings", Ikaros Publications Ltd, 2-3 Ichigaya Honmura-chou Shinjuku-ku Tokyo, Japan, asked me for cooperation in support of their upcoming new A-10 book.

This book will be one of the "famous military aircrafts of the world" series and it's scheduled to be published in October 2011.

Here's a short content preview:

New book: A-10 Warthog in Action by Lou Drendel

In their well-known Aircraft in Action series, Squadron Signal Publications from Carrollton, Texas, USA, released a new photo book about the Hog: A-10 Warthog in Action by Lou Drendel. Item SS1218, Price $14.95.

The A-10 Warthog, a twin engine US Air Force ground attack jet, was designed and built from the wheels up for the sole purpose of supporting ground forces. Outwardly ugly and ungainly, the A-10 is one of the most efficient aerial killers ever to take to the sky. Sheathed in 900 pounds of titanium armor, the Warthog - whose official name is the Thunderbolt II - can survive direct hits from armor-piercing and high-explosive projectiles as large as 23mm. It has triple redundancy in its flight control systems, allowing pilots to fly and land when hydraulic power is out or part of a wing has been shot off. Lou Drendel is an aviation artist, well-known for his great illustrations, especially for Squadron Signal. Already in 1981, he had published the book A-10 Warthog in action (1049). Source

Yesterday, I asked Lou for a little bit more info about the new content of this book, in comparison to the 1981 version. Today, from Lou I got the following e-mail:

Hi Joachim,

Thanks for posting the review on your site. I have asked Squadron/Signal to send you a review copy. Please provide a mailing address.

The new A-10 book includes a lot of the developmental history from the first book, which has been out of print for a long time, but very few of the original photos. About 90% of the photos in the new book are of more recent vintage, including a lot of coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is also a very good first-person narrative of A-10 flying in training and combat.
