ACC grounds A-10 East and A-10 West Demo Teams for 2012 airshow season

By Joachim Jacob, Warthog News Editor

The following statement has been released by Air Combat Command in the ACC Aerial Events section of their public website on Thursday, December 1, 2011:

ACC statement about reduction of single-ship demo teams in 2012

We face significant fiscal constraints and are making tough decisions about the best ways to continue providing combat airpower to warfighting commanders, which is what we do as the Air Force's primary force provider.

One decision we've made is to sponsor one single-ship demonstration team for the 2012 air show season, scaling back from the six teams we've historically sponsored – A-10 East & West, F-16 East & West, F-15E and F-22.

For the 2012 season, we're sponsoring our F-22 demonstration team to perform at up to 20 shows. In addition to the F-22 demonstration team, the Thunderbirds are set to complete a full season next year, and their schedule will be announced next week at the International Council of Air Shows conference.

Reducing the number of single-ship demonstration teams will allow us to reallocate more than 900 sorties to our wings so they can maximize their flying hours for combat readiness training, offsetting some of the reduction we've seen in flying hours. Most importantly, reallocating those sorties will provide an increase in more than 25 combat-ready fighter pilots – that's a very good thing for our Nation and wise stewardship of our limited resources.

The opportunity to showcase our aircrew at air shows around the country is important – and we're confident our Thunderbirds, F-22 demonstration team and Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation will continue highlighting the extraordinary work of all our Airmen.

New US Air Force Budget Grounds Airshow Demonstration Teams

The US Air Force will cut five of its six single-ship demonstration teams for the 2012 airshow season, according to a statement released Thursday on the Air Combat Command website.

Citing budget constraints, only the Air Force's flagship aircraft—the F-22 Raptor—survived the chopping block, subsequently banishing the A-10 Warthog East and West, F-16 Viper East and West, and the F-15E Sentry Eagle teams to the history books, at least for the 2012 airshow season.

Up in the Air

The decision leaves the success of the 2012 season up in the air only weeks after the 2011 season drew to a close. The statement projects a savings of more than 900 sorties that would have otherwise been flown by the teams—900 sorties of which will not be hitting the circuit this year. While none of the USAF's multi-ship teams, which include the iconic Thunderbirds and the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation programs, were significantly affected by the cuts, the budget blast will leave a number of airshows without a big-ticket, high-powered performer—like the F-16 Viper—to anchor the show.

Small and mid-sized shows across the country who often "rely on these assets will experience a significant reduction in visitors and sponsors," said a seasoned airshow organizer who asked to remain anonymous in order to speak candidly.

Additionally, "for the organizations that don't have private owners to tap [to fill the show-bill], this will impart a very negative impact on not only the show itself but the community that has come to expect the economics benefits of having the show in town," the source said.

Chris Trobridge, a member of the Commemorative Air Force with strong ties to the airshow community, agrees. "Unfortunately…this will hurt airshow attendance and sponsorship. The draw of the demo teams was always very high and, without them, I do not know how many people in the general public will want to attend shows of [only] warbirds and aerobatics performances."

As goes the money, so go the airplanes. Without big, military-issue afterburners, sponsors will be less likely to buy into the show. Consequently, many shows will be sent scrambling to shore up enough support to drop a civilian act into the anchor slot. But private acts do not come cheap, with the crowd-drawing jet acts often running at several thousand dollars per hour.

Someone to Look Up To

It is not just the airshow circuit that will lose out as a result of the cuts, though. Indeed, the Air Force itself stands to come out on the losing end of the deal. With less presence in the public eye, the branch will lose a substantial channel by which to connect to the nation it serves.

Considered a powerful tool for recruitment, "[the single ship demo teams] make you feel directly connected to those who are fighting tooth and nail for our interests abroad. They create a fire in your gut, a powerful sense of exhilaration and patriotic defiance," says defense blogger Ty Rogoway, owner of AviationIntel.com. "They are much more real, down to earth, and approachable than their flawless Thunderbird counterparts," he said.

"Unfortunately, the result will be the USAF experiencing a reduction in new recruits," the anonymous airshow organizer said.

But while disappointed, the organizer was undeterred. "I can work with this sacrifice—if it is just for one year. Our show will go on." the source said.

Air show crew visits, pays respect to vets at VA Medical Center

Chicago Daily Herald

In Lake County to participate in this weekend's Waukegan Air Show, members of an Air Force demonstration team visited with veterans at the North Chicago VA Medical Center on Thursday.

The crew members - all maintenance workers for a tank-busting jet called the A-10 Thunderbolt II - talked about their formidable plane's capabilities, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and other military topics.

The veterans peppered the crew members with questions about the A-10's ordnance, cost, maneuverability and combat experience.

Master Sgt. Jason Lynch, the leader of the visiting group, was particularly happy to talk about how the far-from-sleek A-10 overcame its unofficial nickname, the Warthog, by achieving combat success in the first Persian Gulf War.

"It was hated until (the Air Force) saw how it worked," Lynch said.

Based at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Ga., Lynch's unit performs at about 30 air shows a year. It's essentially a recruiting team, Lynch said.

The visit to the VA hospital was out of the ordinary for the crew.

"We're trying to make a difference for the veterans, and trying to bring some light to their day," Lynch said.

"And to show our appreciation and support for what they've done for us," added Sgt. David Clifford.

More than 20 veterans participated in the discussion, which was staged in a recreation room. Everyone got commemorative photographs of the A-10 and stickers.

Air Force veteran Bill Holliman was particularly interested in the A-10's performance in the current war in the Middle East.

Lynch told the group a squadron from Moody Air Force Base soon will be deployed to Afghanistan.

"Good luck, sir," Holliman responded.

D-M hosts Heritage Flight Conference

by Staff Sgt. Jake Richmond
355th Fighter Wing Public Affairs

3/11/2009 - DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- State of the art and historic military aircraft from around the country came here March 4-8 for Air Combat Command's annual Heritage Flight Conference.

The Heritage Flight Conference allows civilian and military pilots to train together in preparation for the spring and summer air show seasons. Heritage formations, during which modern and historic fighters fly together, are a popular highlight event at air shows throughout the United States and Canada.

The historic aircraft that flew in this year's HFC included the P-51 Mustang, A-1 Sky Raider, F-4 Phantom II, P-40 Warhawk, and F-86 Sabre. The modern ACC flying demonstration aircraft included the A-10 Thunderbolt II, the F-15 Eagle, the F-15E Strike Eagle, the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the F-22A Raptor.

Approximately 300 people showed up on the designated flying days, March 6-8, and watched the demonstration flights from bleachers set up on the flight line.
